A Few Old Games I Still Enjoy Playing!

Writer: Daniel LawsonDaniel Lawson

Well, I finally figured out something to write a post about at least, that took a while. I need to figure out what I want to do for this blog beyond random lists like this. There is plenty of time for that and I do have a few ideas, maybe writing-related posts too, reviews are also still an option though I doubt I am the only gamer who has long since stopped going to the usual places for reviews (maybe that's a topic right there?) Also looking for a small job is eating into my time and energy too so I'm unsure how regular my posts will be for a while.

Anyway, before I go off on some wild tangent this short list is just a few old games I still enjoy playing which aren't on my other lists. I mean given how creaky this PC is getting I am having to look toward older titles until I can afford an upgrade. BG3 I wrangled into working but the 2nd area tanked the framerate from a barely tolerable 30 right down to 5... Yikes. Cyberpunk... Well, that works but I'd rather wait and play it at something that isn't potato settings. So, I got to thinking about old games and decided that would be a good blog post.

Like before they are things I have played a lot of or finished at some point as there are a lot of old games I have lying around I still want to get around to playing more fully. With all that preamble out of the way, let's get to this admittedly shorter list.

Heroes of Might & Magic 3

A classic so well known it almost needs no introduction but this game is still a ton of fun to me and not much has come close to it since. There have been a few others like Heroes Hour and the King's Bounty series but this was among the first games I actually bought when I switched to PC gaming properly.

A decent mix of strategy and RPG though not so deep as to become overwhelming at any point. You roam a map gathering resources to upgrade your towns to make better troops and level up your heroes in typical RPG fashion to make them better in battles. A random map generator, a host of different factions, monsters, spells, items and more and most importantly, it is just fun to play

Something I feel some modern games forget about at times.

Dungeon Keeper 2

Ah, Dungeon Keeper 2 is a game I very rarely get tired of going back to and is still a fairly unique idea to this day despite a few other games attempting similar things (Evil Genius and the Dungeon series.)

Rather than playing as the good guys, you play as the disembodied overseer, training your monsters, laying traps and building a dungeon to thwart the do-gooder's attempts to banish you.

Honestly, it's a concept I think more people should do their own spin on though that might be my enjoyment of base-building games peeking through. One of the Bullfrog classics without a doubt in my mind.

Theme Park

Speaking of Bullfrog classics, Theme Park is another one I still very much enjoy diving into at times. Sure, the Rollercoaster Tycoon games I think are better 'sims' but Theme Park just feels more fun to me. Though I have to admit most of my playtime for Theme Park was actually on the Mega Drive (Yes, I'm old!)

The Mega Drive version had some issues like roller coasters being a bit glitchy and time-consuming to make but that was about all (the graphics were slightly different too if I recall correctly.) These days if I dive into it, it's with the GOG version which is much easier to play than with a controller.

Honestly, it was a close call between this and Theme Hospital but I slightly prefer this. May as well have called this my favourite Bullfrog games list at this rate!

Okay, so first off I apologise for this being a bit short and taking so long life is a bit taxing right now. I do at least have a few ideas for the next couple of posts so hopefully I'll be able to work on those without my brain just stopping working.

As always, thanks for reading and if you wish to support me further the Patreon and Ko-Fi links are up on the main page, thanks again!
