Games I'd Like to See Get the Remaster/Remake Treatment!

Writer: Daniel LawsonDaniel Lawson

Now, I know the whole idea of remasters and remakes can often send the internet a bit crazy and for good reason at times. Often they can run the whole range of being completely awesome and well-done remasters down to it being hard to tell what was done to warrant it being called a remaster.

In my view, remasters are a good idea for games that don't run properly on modern hardware or are good games merely held back by their time of release (like lacking a good UI for example.) Remakes are a bit trickier, for example, Final Fantasy 7, which I view the original and the remake as completely different games. Given one is a JRPG and the other leans more toward Action RPG.

Anyway! I won't be diving into that debate this week so you can put the torches and pitchforks down for now. I decided to do something a little more positive and mention some games I'd like to see get a remaster and why, enjoy!

#5 - Alpha Centauri

This is one of my earliest favourite 4X strategy games and still a fun one even today despite its age and technical quirks. Probably one of the best 4X games ever made that suffers a lot these days due to its age. It doesn't like alt-tabbing (for me anyway) but it is still worth wrestling with to learn as it's honestly very atmospheric for a turn-based strategy game.

Throw in unit customisation and the fact the opposing factions acted appropriately to their ethos and I remain surprised there's been no mention of a remaster for this. Though I'll admit I am quite biased this was among my first PC games alongside Civilisation 2.

Yes, I know they tried a sort of remake for it with Beyond Earth. I think a remaster of the original plus its expansion would be more than enough for this one. Just polish up the graphics and UI and it's a sure-fire winner if you ask me!

#4 - Medieval 2: Total War

This one is probably the Total War game I played the most and only really got surpassed for me by Shogun 2 and the TW: W2. A frankly huge map for the grand campaign with tons of factions you could play as and I still genuinely think this is still one of the best Total War games you can get into. Doubly so if you prefer the historical offerings as many do, when they remastered the first Rome I got my hopes up that they may actually get around to this.

While nothing has been mentioned about it yet I still hope they consider remastering this one (as I am not sure how likely Medieval 3 is these days.) If they did a good job remastering it, some graphics and UI polish and perhaps some integrated mod support it's a surefire winner in my mind.

#3 Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2

A lot of games have tried to emulate the Dungeon Keeper series but the originals are hard to beat and are only really held back from being enjoyed more because they are so old. The first one is a DOS game and while I know War for the Overworld is amazing I'd still love to see these classics given a coat of modern paint.

Also, I'd love to see the first one with the ability to zoom out a smidge further as it is a little claustrophobic and can be a little tricky to navigate due to that. Otherwise, it's still perfectly playable and fun even today. The second one fares a bit better yet honestly if they remaster one they may as well do the other.

Two of Bullfrog's classic offerings are where they explore the fun side of letting players be the bad guys and fighting off those pesky heroes. Still a fun pair of games even without a remaster!

#2 Total Annihilation

Before anyone says anything yes, I know Beyond All Reason is a thing already though I think there's still room for this RTS to be remastered and enjoyed! I mean this was the RTS that showed me things could be more than Command & Conquer's simplicity without turning into a grognard wargame.

It allowed so many ways to play, from swarming your foes with cheap and fast units to turtling up and pummeling them with artillery from across the map (my favourite!) Not sure how likely it is to happen these days given the RTS is a bit of a rarity though I can always hope.

#1 Fallout: New Vegas

My favourite of the modern Fallout games and I don't think I'm alone in that plus I think it is well deserving of at least a remaster if not a remake in a less clunky engine. Obsidian's offering felt more like the original Fallout's than Bethesda's foray into the post-nuclear setting to me. Not to mention they were given a harsh deadline to all but rush it out meaning a lot of cut content and weird quirks that a remaster could easily fix.

If I am being entirely honest about it I'd be happy if it just got a remaster plus the cut content added, that'd be more than enough for me and I suspect I'd not be alone in that thinking. Though I don't feel it's particularly likely, we are more likely to see another version of Skyrim be released long before New Vegas or FO3 gets a look in again.

So, there we are, five games (sort of) I think would be worth getting a remaster. What games would you like to see given a remaster or even a remake and why? Let me know!
